The Weekend Gamer
Thoughts on gaming culture, living among non-gamers, and growing up in the nintendo generation

Weekly Warhammer Wrapup–Episode #3

Well, this weekend was chalk full of great gaming.  Spazter is still Level 27, but getting close to leveling.  I actually didn’t play him that much this weekend.  It is every gamer husband’s wish to have their wife play an MMO with them.  This weekend, my wish came true.  My wife decided to play an Archmage named Leahla.

To help her out I rolled a White Lion named Temagahst.  It is interesting trying to teach someone how to move an interact with an MMO, especially someone who has never played anything more involved than Tetris before.  Not to mention that she is Left Handed so the same setup and such that I use does not come naturally for her.  I am sure that if she sticks with it, she will get the hang of it.

Noteworthy patches and Hotfixes

This week was absolutely stuffed full of updates.  First off, we are now at 1.0.4. With that comes Warhammer’s first Live Event, more about that in a bit, and free character transfers from low population servers to more populated ones.  Also, they continue to adjust XP gains in Open RvR showing that they are committed to making that the focus of Warhammer. Mythic also hinted at the next Live Event where they will release two new classes to the fray:  The Black Guard for Destro and The Night of the Blazing Sun for Order.  There was a ton more, I would suggest heading over to the Herald and checking it out if you are interested.

Witching Night

What makes an MMO but a living, changing world?  That is the thing about MMOs that drives people to play the same game for six years going.  Mythic did a good job of keeping players in Dark Age of Camelot by introducing campaigns that would not only be fun and engaging, but would also change the world in which we played.  I am glad to say that this tradition has not gone away with WAR.  Introducing the Witching Night Live Event .

The Witching Night is a long tradition for the Warhammer Setting (at least in the RPG books).  The basic idea being that everyone wears a mask to scare away the evil spirits and all types of ghoulish riff-raff come out to play.  The Live Event consists of four new public quests placed strategically in each of the four tiers’ RvR Areas.  Stage 1 of the PQ starts off with killing 100 enemy players.  Whichever realm gets the 100 first gets to participate in Stage 2.

To tell you the truth, I didn’t play enough to actually get to Stage 2, so no report there, but once it is over everyone rolls on PQ loot.  If you happen to be lucky enough to get a high roll, you might end up with one the four masks or one of the two cloaks.  From what I was told the masks also drop off of enemy players, and rare mobs roaming the RvR scene.  For those of you who don’t like RvR, there is something for you too.  By killing the Witches gathering around their cauldrons you can land some of the unique rewards as well.

Gunbad

Finally, just as I was gearing up to play the Live Event I got a tell for a Gunbad Raid.  They wanted to try a six man to get more loot.  We ended up joining in with a group and taking the right side.  After that, I stuck around with the group we joined and we decided to take the left side, which unfortunately we didn’t finish.  Then, many hours later we met up with two more groups to fill out the Warband and took the hardest path of them all, the center.  It was a shame though that not enough people had enough influence to enter the final instance and claim glory over Gunbad.  Guess I’ll save that task for another day.

So, you may be wondering, what is this Gunbad and why is Chris so stoked about it?  Ever since I got the chance to test it out in Beta I’ve been waiting to get into Gunbad.  Gunbad, or Mount Gunbad, is a dungeon in the Badlands that is filled with Night Goblins.  All of which happen to be Champions or higher.  The dungeon is designed for two full groups, or a well decked out six man.

Intertwined in these caves and tunnels is a number of really cool Public Quests that gain you influence towards a couple really nice rewards.  The loot is good, and the fun is .. well .. fun.  As you gain influence you get access to the one of the three instances at then end of each path (left, right, and center).  The left wing requires 1/3 of your influence bar full, the right 2/3, and the center 3/3.  I only managed to get 2/3 of my bar full for the night, and didn’t get a chance to play any of the instances.

Wrap Up

All in all this was a great week for Warhammer.  Even though the game just released, the Warhammer devs had a Live Event ready to go for us.  That shows that Mythic is devoted in making this game a success.  However, I am still worried about just how huge the world is.  It’s great to have a lot of content, but unless you know 4-6 people who want to play exactly when you do and do the same things you are doing, you are going to find yourself lost and missing out on a good amount of it.
Until next weekend, Get Your WAAAAGH on!!!
