Fallout Retrospective Video

I’ve still got two things to post tonight–one is the Weekly Warhammer Wrapup from Chris, and the other is a summary of my many gaming exploits this weekend.  But until then, I have to highlight the above video from Game Trailers for those of you looking to either relive the Fallout franchise, or who need a primer before picking up their copy of Fallout 3 this week.

Someone asked me recently on the blog about my thoughts concerning Fallout, and they are summed up thusly:  must buy.

This game is my most anticipated game of the 2008, hands down.  I’ve got a brief hands-on with the game in August, and I was even more convinced that Fallout 3 is going to be a tremendously engaging time sink for all of us this winter.  The setting is rich, the story is deep, and the game play is innovative.

In this world of online multiplayer rule, it’s great to see games like Fallout 3 or last years Bioshock come along, offering rich story telling and enjoyable gaming experiences in a single player campaign.  Forget the multiplayer–this is a game that’s worth the 60 bucks for it’s solo content.

My only worry was whether or not to pick it up on PC or 360.  You can also pick it up on PS3, but I heard it runs in a slightly inferior manner on that platform.   I’m going for it on the 360, for the achievements but also mostly because my computer is old and outdated.  If you pick up a PC copy, you open yourself up to the world of mods, which helped Oblivion immensely.  So if your computer is up to par, go with PC.  If not, 360 or PS3.  Just go pick it up.

  1. I’ve got the base card it supports (ATI x850) so hopefully it won’t run too bad. If there’s huge problems I’ll consider a better card and bump up to 3gb RAM, but I don’t need super high detail.

Hopefully there’ll still be some copies around on the weekend!

  2. im tempted to go to the Fallout 3 party at my local gamestop tonight at 10pm. Supposed festivities before the midnight release

  3. I’m picking up Fallout 3 at the mall Gamestop today. Hopefully there’s not some 500mb patch I’ve got to get first. I feel like when I was a schoolkid getting Final Fantasy 3 on release day!

  4. I might pick it up when I get my replacement 360.

Thanks for the video link. I had never even heard of Fallout until a year or two ago. The “talking head” graphics and voice-acting seem great in those old games.

  5. If you do get Fallout 3, make sure you don’t play it right before bedtime. I went to the lower level of Springvale Elementary School, where the mutant ants are. I happened to find their nest and I stepped on a huge batch of eggs. All of a sudden, there were at least 20-30 ants coming at me from everywhere, and I got freaked out and backed myself into a corner, swinging my baseball bat in a panic while the damn ants bit me to death.

Looking back, I probably could have thrown a frag grenade, but man those ants freaked me out!

    In closing…..THIS GAME ROCKS!
