Little Big Planet Delayed

How did I miss this one yesterday?

I went to Best Buy this morning, intent on purchasing a PS3, and preordering Little Big Planet.  I had my 80 gig PS3, extra controller, HDMI cable, and LBP preorder case in hand, at the counter, when the cashier looked up and said, “oh no…I can’t sell you this.”

What?  He proceeded to tell me that there was a “world wide recall” of the game and that they couldn’t take preorders at all anymore.  He called his manager over in alarm that there was even a preorder box out on the shelves.

I was excited about grabbing a blu-ray movie today, or maybe playing some Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune or Resistance, but without being able to verify what the heck they were talking about, I decided to put it all back.

A quick google search turned up a few news posts, explaining that apparently on one of the music tracks there is a background reading of parts of the Qu’ran, in Somalian no less, and that some of their Muslim playtesters had noticed and expressed being offended.  Sony’s decision, rather than patching the game, was to replace all existing disks.

Dag, yo.

Apparently it’s not going to be a long wait though, and Sony announced that the new ship date for Little Big Planet would be Oct. 28th.  So I’ll probably end up picking up a PS3 anyway.

I just wish Best Buy employees wouldn’t freak out so much (they’ve even taken the game off their website completely) and take my simple preorder. ;)

  1. Yeah, I pre-ordered my game to be picked up on Oct. 21st and now the website reports that my order will be available on Nov 30th. That’s more than a month of delay. I really hope I don’t have to wait that long. That would totally suck. But, I’m glad you heard Oct. 28th. That’s a good sign.

  2. Wow, that stinks! Delayed for a sound track.

Well, the good news is, in less than 16 hours we will have our hands on Fable 2 :)

  3. Just to add to the mess, I just got my BestBuy preorder email update saying:
[Status: Pre-order release date is 12/30/2008.]

I hope that is just a computer glitch.
If not, then I will be buying it elsewhere and cancelling my preorder and still keep my Nariko costume code. :)

  4. Here is a comment from the writer of that controversial song that caused the delay.

Apparently, he’s a respectful Muslim! I haven’t read the song myself, but it’s quite possible the song was entirely respectful toward Islam. The controversy comes from some Muslims who believe it’s improper to sing the Qur’an in any form.

I’m really skeptical of this move by Sony. It seems like a concession they would not have made for Christianity or Judaism. This is politics, not genuine care.
