The Weekend Gamer
Thoughts on gaming culture, living among non-gamers, and growing up in the nintendo generation

The Weekend Review (August 15th-17th)

I played music for a wedding rehearsal on Friday night, the Wedding Saturday morning, Saturday night service, two Sunday services, and then a Church picnic all afternoon, so my game play was limited, but much has happened over here in Weekend Gamer land.

First off–I was disappointed with Bionic Commando Rearmed.  There, I said it.  I think it’s the fact that the game is pretty brutal with you difficulty wise.  The sound and graphics are great, but I just can’t get over not being able to jump.  We’ll see how far I can slug through it.

I’m making good progress in my as of yet unborn Fable II Character’s bank account, thanks to Fable Pub Games.   All three are pretty mediocre on the fun scale, but the unlocking of items and perks in Fable II is what has me returning over and over again.  By far the most fun to play is Fortune’s Tower, Fable II’s version of Black Jack.  I make decent money there, but the easiest way to make cash so far has been Spinner Box, the Fable II version of slots.  It’s boring as heck, but man does it get results!  I’m up above 20,000 total gold so far, and I’m hoping to have a princely sum ready for my character once Fable II launches in October.

Lastly, I received an unexpected windfall in the way of a 5 year late college graduation gift from my grandparents.  w00t!  I’m using some of it to help fund my PAX trip that is mere days away, but I spent the first portion of it today on a DS, to help me have something else to toy with while waiting in line.  Thousands of people have their DS’s (is that a proper usage of the possessive??) in tow at PAX, making for some raucous multiplayer.  Plus, you get to use your DS as your nerd lighter at the evening concerts.

I went back and forth, and even stopped to look up reviews on Meta Critic in the middle of Best Buy in order to choose which game to start with–Final Fantasy Tactics A2, or Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles.  I ended up going with the tactical RPG over the dungeon crawler.

Rachel bought herself Petz: Cats 2 (there were no copies of Petz: Cats)  and New Super Mario Bros.  That’s right, she bought twice as many games for the DS as me.  *cough*gamer*cough*

So now I have one more way of distracting myself while I’m out and about.  I’ll let you know how it goes.
