The Danger of The Rock Band Music Store
Two things came together this week to form a perfect storm of Rock and Roll–first, the Omeganauts from PAX that I was paired with to play Rock Band (we dubbed ourselves the Photoshop Heroes) decided to plan a reunion of sorts online tonight.
The second thing is the recent release of the Boston 6 song pack coinciding with the new Rock Band Music Store.
This highly fortuitous series of events has sent me into a music buying spiral. I think I added something like 12 songs to my already mammoth Rock Band track list. You know it’s bad when you’re buying music, you run out of points, and then you decide to run to the store to grab more.
The best thing about the store is that we finally have the ability to preview the songs before we buy–something that helped me to realize I had missed some gems in the past few months simply because I didn’t recognize the song from the title.
A close second to this feature is the fact that buying music now happens in game, as opposed to on the dashboard. You buy a song, it downloads, and bam, you’re ready to play, and you’re already in game anyway. Doing it the old way feels dirty now.
My one fear about attempting the online Rock Party is the complete and utter dysfunction of my instruments’ headset jacks. They just don’t work–and that’s a huge hit to the fun when you’re trying to jam with friends all over the countryside. We’ll see how it goes tonight.
P.S.–for you Wii owners, Rock Band now has an official date for it’s wiimotable version–June 22nd. About time, right?

The reunion was a great success! After spending about 15-20 minutes working out the technical difficulties, we were able to jam to about 5 or 6 songs before Accalon (Ryan) had to head out. I’m glad we got your headset working before hand, I couldn’t imagine playing without it.
Now, if only we can figure out why the downloaded content wasn’t available to us. We could only get the Oasis songs to work even though we shared quite a few songs.
Don’t forget to check out our PAX performance when you get a chance. It’s on my website. Just click on the “extras” button at the top.
